LMW and NEHHDC Partner to Transform Eri Silk Spinning in Assam

In a significant move towards sustainable textile development, Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW) has joined hands with the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) to set up a dedicated Eri silk spinning plant in Kharuajan, Assam.

This strategic collaboration aims to boost the production of Eri silk yarn—a unique and eco-friendly natural fiber indigenous to India’s North East. Eri silk, often referred to as the “peace silk,” is renowned for its soft texture, thermal properties, and ability to be produced without harming the silkworm. This sustainable silk variety holds immense potential in both domestic and international markets, especially among conscious consumers seeking cruelty-free textiles.

The upcoming facility will feature LMW’s advanced spinning machinery, ensuring high-efficiency processing while maintaining the integrity of the delicate Eri fibers. With LMW’s technological prowess and NEHHDC’s grassroots presence and expertise in traditional crafts, this initiative is poised to modernize Eri silk production without compromising its authenticity.

Speaking on the development, representatives from both LMW and NEHHDC emphasized the project’s impact on empowering local artisans, creating employment opportunities, and increasing market access for Eri silk products. The partnership also aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting indigenous fibers and enhancing the value chain in the North Eastern region.

This project not only reaffirms LMW’s commitment to supporting sustainable and inclusive textile practices but also positions Eri silk as a future-ready fiber for fashion and home textile segments worldwide. The Kharuajan Eri silk plant is expected to be operational soon, serving as a model for integrating modern manufacturing with heritage fibers—ensuring that India’s textile traditions evolve with innovation and purpose.
