BTMA held an emergency Board of Directors meeting on August 6, 2025, to share updates on the US visit and to outline the next steps.
BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell informed the board that Bangladesh intends to import $1 billion worth of cotton from the United States as part of efforts to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries. The Bangladesh delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), led by BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell.
Several members of BTMA’s Board of Directors and associated member mills also joined the mission upon invitation from the Ministry. Between July 28 and August 3, 2025, the BTMA delegation actively participated in a series of high-level meetings with key US government and industry stakeholders. After discussions, the US government agreed to reduce the tariff on Bangladeshi products from 35% to 20%.
In addition to the tariff negotiations, the BTMA delegation held several other important meetings with relevant US institutions to strengthen trade collaboration. The Board extended floral congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to the BTMA President and the entire delegation for their successful mission and strategic leadership. The initiative is seen as a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s efforts to expand bilateral trade and strengthen its position in the global textile supply chain, especially amid the changing dynamics of international trade regulations.
