Zeefier Turns Local Seaweed into Sustainable Natural Dyes
Zeefier Advances Sustainable Textile Dyes Using Seaweed Innovation

Founded in the Netherlands, Zeefier is pioneering a new generation of textile dyes derived from seaweed, offering a renewable alternative to conventional petrol-based colourants. Supported by the EU’s BlueInvest program, the company is now scaling its eco-friendly solution for global dye houses.

Petrol-Based Dyes Under Scrutiny
Synthetic dyes, widely used across textiles, are derived from fossil fuels and pose significant environmental challenges. These colourants are often persistent, potentially harmful, and hinder the recyclability and biodegradability of natural fabrics. Despite their widespread use, the origin of textile dyes is rarely disclosed, leaving consumers unaware of their environmental footprint.

Co-founder Anne Boermans highlights this issue, noting that while garment labels specify materials like cotton or wool, they almost never reveal the source of the dye—most of which are petrol-based.

Seaweed: A Sustainable Alternative
After nearly a decade of research and development, Zeefier was officially established in 2020 with a mission to replace these “hidden pollutants.” The company has developed a growing range of natural dyes—from browns and greens to reds and greys—using seaweed as the primary raw material.

Unlike traditional synthetic dyes, Zeefier’s algae-based colours allow textiles to remain fully biodegradable, aligning with circular economy principles. The concept draws inspiration from historical natural dyeing practices but shifts the focus from land-based sources to abundant marine resources.

Designed for Industry Adoption
A key strength of Zeefier’s innovation lies in its compatibility with existing industrial systems. Its dyes are engineered as plug-and-play solutions that integrate seamlessly into standard dye-house operations, minimizing disruption and encouraging adoption in a traditionally conservative industry.

While currently popular in the premium textile segment, Zeefier’s technology is also suitable for broader, mainstream applications—positioning the company as a scalable solution in the transition toward more sustainable textile production.
