Giriraj Singh Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthen Northeast’s Textile Value Chain
Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the textile value chain in the Northeast, spanning production “from cocoon to global markets.”

Speaking at the inauguration of the Integrated Textile and Tourism Centre (ITTC) at Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi district, Singh described the Northeast as a vital pillar of India’s textile heritage, referring to it as the land of Muga, Eri and rich weaving traditions. He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains focused on advancing the sector’s growth.

According to the minister, the ITTC will function as a comprehensive platform offering training, design development, silk processing, product diversification and tourism-linked opportunities. The centre is expected to provide artisans with enhanced access to both domestic and international markets.

Singh noted that the Government of India is currently implementing several schemes aimed at supporting handloom clusters, improving raw material supply, modernising weaving technology and promoting natural fibres across global markets.

He emphasised that India is the only country producing all major varieties of silk — Muga, Tasar, Mulberry and Eri — and said that if Meghalaya and other Northeastern states expand their Muga and Eri production, India could emerge as a global leader in the segment, especially as many countries shift towards synthetic fibres.

Highlighting the Ministry’s livelihood-focused efforts, Singh said his goal is to ensure that every weaver earns Rs. 50,000 (US $ 554) per month, adding that a roadmap has already been prepared and will be implemented in Meghalaya with the support of the state government.

The minister also announced that a Weavers’ Service Centre will be established in Meghalaya once land is allotted, pointing out that the Northeast currently has only one such centre, located in Guwahati.
