TCS unveils AI Platform to Transform Saree Design and Weaving Efficiency
TCS unveils an AI platform to enhance saree design accuracy and improve weaving efficiency, driving digital transformation in textiles.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has developed an artificial intelligence–driven platform that enables the creation of three-dimensional saree and fabric designs, aiming to improve design precision while enhancing efficiency across the weaving process.

The solution, called the Intelligent Design Platform, was presented at the recently held AI Impact Summit. The platform allows users to generate customized textile designs and converts them into loom-ready digital outputs, helping weavers translate design intent into accurate execution.

According to a TCS executive at the company’s exhibition booth, the system can respond to customer inputs such as combining contemporary motifs with traditional Kanjivaram-style aesthetics. The platform generates design outputs instantly, reducing the need for manual pattern calculations and enabling artisans to focus more on craftsmanship.

TCS stated that the platform significantly shortens the design finalization process, reducing timelines that traditionally stretch over several days or weeks to just a few minutes. It also seeks to address inefficiencies in the handloom ecosystem, where design mismatches and execution errors often lead to high product rejection rates. In certain segments, returns can account for nearly 40% of total output, the executive noted.

Alongside this, TCS also showcased Smart Weaver Assist, an LED-based guidance solution that provides real-time visual cues for thread movement during weaving. The system is designed to support faster production while enabling less-experienced weavers to execute complex patterns without memorizing long weaving sequences.

The company confirmed that the technology has been successfully piloted in the Kanjivaram saree cluster in Kanchipuram, a region globally known for its silk sarees. While the solution is yet to be commercially rolled out, TCS is reportedly in discussions with the Handloom Corporation of India and the Ministry of Textiles to support wider adoption.

Under the new system, traditional hand-drawn pattern creation is replaced with AI-generated designs. The platform can interpret voice instructions, hand sketches or reference images and convert them into loom-compatible digital formats. Customers can preview the final design using three-dimensional visualization or augmented reality before weaving begins, allowing early evaluation of the finished fabric.
