Assam’s Muga Silk Set for Global Branding Push Under Mission Senehjori
₹411-crore initiative aims to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain, boost farmer incomes, and position Assam’s golden silk in premium global markets

The Government of India and the Assam Government have launched Mission Senehjori, a comprehensive ₹411-crore programme aimed at transforming the state’s renowned Muga silk industry through improved production, branding, quality assurance, and international market development. The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of households directly while supporting the wider ecosystem of nearly 2.5 lakh weavers, rearers, and entrepreneurs associated with Muga silk production.

Launched by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, the mission seeks to strengthen every stage of the Muga silk value chain, from silkworm rearing and cocoon production to processing, branding, and marketing. The programme is designed to enhance the socio-economic conditions of stakeholders while preserving one of Assam’s most iconic traditional industries.

A key objective of Mission Senehjori is to significantly increase earnings for Muga silk producers. Currently, farmgate prices for Muga silk are around ₹25,000 per kilogram, and the initiative aims to more than double returns through improved processing capabilities, stronger branding strategies, better quality control, and expanded market access.

The programme will also address challenges that have affected the sector for years, including post-production losses, product adulteration, and misuse of the Geographical Indication (GI) identity associated with authentic Assam Muga silk. Enhanced traceability measures and branding initiatives are expected to help protect the uniqueness and premium value of the fibre in domestic and international markets.

Known for its natural golden sheen, durability, and exclusivity, Muga silk is produced only in Assam and is regarded as one of the world’s rarest silk varieties. Industry stakeholders believe the new mission will help elevate the global profile of the fibre while creating new opportunities for exports, rural employment, and women-led enterprises across the state.

With substantial investments planned across infrastructure, technology adoption, capacity building, and market promotion, Mission Senehjori is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning Assam’s Muga silk as a globally recognized luxury textile while strengthening livelihoods throughout the region’s traditional silk sector.
