India’s First 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Demonstration Plant to Boost Indigenous Manufacturing
Amravati, Maharashtra: India is set to strengthen its advanced materials ecosystem with the establishment of the country’s first 120 tonnes per annum (TPA) Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at the PM MITRA Park in Amravati. The project will be developed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
The initiative includes the creation of a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development, designed to support research, innovation, technology validation, and industrial adoption. The centre will house a carbon fibre demonstration plant, an advanced R&D facility, a testing and characterisation laboratory, a technology scale-up and validation unit, a skill development centre, and an industry support and technology transfer platform.
The demonstration plant is intended to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale research and commercial manufacturing. By enabling pilot-scale production, product development, process validation, and technology transfer, the facility is expected to accelerate the commercialization of indigenous carbon fibre technologies for Indian industries.
Carbon fibre is widely used in high-value sectors such as aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, railways, infrastructure, hydrogen storage, and sports equipment due to its lightweight and high-strength properties. The project is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imported carbon fibre, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, conserve foreign exchange, and enhance strategic self-reliance.
Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director of BTRA, stated that the initiative will promote research and innovation, encourage collaboration between industry and academia, support startups and MSMEs, and develop a skilled workforce for India’s growing advanced composites sector.
