The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has launched the Microfibre Action Alliance (MAA), a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing microfibre pollution across the apparel and textile industries.
The alliance brings together leading companies to accelerate the adoption of scientifically proven solutions that prevent the release of microfibres into the environment during textile manufacturing, product use and laundering.
According to TNC, the alliance’s founding members include Nike, Patagonia, Under Armour, Lululemon, Cotopaxi and REI Co-op. The initiative aims to encourage industry-wide cooperation, promote innovative technologies and establish effective strategies to minimise fibre shedding throughout textile supply chains.
Growing Concerns Over Microfibre Pollution
Microfibres are tiny particles released from textiles during manufacturing, washing and everyday use. Research cited by TNC indicates that microfibres account for more than 30% of ocean microplastics, highlighting the growing environmental challenges associated with textile production and consumption.
Although synthetic materials such as polyester are frequently associated with microfibre pollution, natural fibres, including cotton and wool, can also release fibres into the environment. Dyes, chemical treatments and textile finishes may further influence the environmental impact of these released particles. Once microfibres enter freshwater systems, oceans and other ecosystems, their widespread distribution and persistence make them difficult to remove.
Industry Collaboration to Accelerate Solutions
TNC’s plastics project director, Patrick Jurney, highlighted the importance of translating scientific research into practical industry action. He noted that years of research have advanced the understanding of microfibre pollution and that the alliance will help companies apply existing knowledge while building on emerging solutions.
Jurney also emphasised that tackling the issue requires coordinated action across the textile sector. Through collaboration, the alliance aims to support solutions that protect freshwater ecosystems, marine environments, wildlife and communities worldwide.
Building on Existing Scientific Research
The Microfibre Action Alliance will complement the ongoing work of The Microfibre Consortium, an organisation dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and developing practical tools to address fibre fragmentation across the textile industry.
As part of the initiative, participating companies will implement and evaluate solutions within their respective supply chains. The findings will help identify effective approaches, generate practical insights and enable the wider industry to benefit from successful interventions.
Kelly Sheridan, CEO of The Microfibre Consortium, welcomed the alliance’s focus on accelerating the adoption of new technologies and innovations throughout textile supply chains. She expressed the organisation’s commitment to working with alliance members and the broader industry to reduce fibre fragmentation.
Roadmap for Industry-Wide Progress
According to TNC, the alliance remains open to additional companies interested in contributing to the effort. It plans to develop a scalable roadmap that supports the wider adoption of effective microfibre reduction measures and encourages sustained progress across the apparel and textile industries.
The launch of the Microfibre Action Alliance represents a collaborative step towards addressing textile-related pollution through research, innovation and supply chain improvements. By combining scientific evidence with practical implementation, the initiative seeks to help the industry reduce microfibre releases and strengthen its environmental responsibility.
