Archroma Turns Wool Waste Into Next-Generation Textile Dyes
Swiss textile chemicals specialist Archroma has developed a new dyeing technology that transforms wool waste into a raw material for textile pigments, offering a new approach to chemical production and textile circularity. The company’s FiberColors technology uses at least 50% wool waste to produce high-sulphur pigments for textile dyeing, creating an alternative source of raw materials while giving unwanted wool a new industrial application.
Archroma has received the 2026 ICIS Innovation Award in the “Best Product Innovation from a Large Company” category for the FiberColors technology. The recognition highlights the growing role of waste-derived materials in textile chemicals and demonstrates how textile waste can be redirected into commercially relevant chemical products rather than being treated solely as an end-of-life challenge.
FiberColors is designed to replace a portion of the fossil-based raw materials traditionally used in dye production with wool waste. According to Archroma, the FiberColors range contains at least 50% wool waste, allowing discarded wool to become part of the pigment synthesis process used to create textile dyes.
Wool waste can be difficult to manage when it is unsuitable for conventional textile applications. In some cases, unwanted wool can also create disposal challenges and additional costs for farmers. By incorporating this material into pigment production, Archroma’s technology provides an alternative route for recovering value from wool that might otherwise be discarded.
The introduction of FiberColors also reflects a broader shift in the textile chemicals industry towards circular raw materials and resource efficiency. Rather than relying entirely on virgin or fossil-based feedstocks, manufacturers are increasingly exploring waste materials as inputs for new chemical products.
The technology has also been demonstrated through a collaboration with Orta, with the companies introducing a denim collection dyed using FiberColors. The application demonstrates how wool-derived materials can be incorporated into textile dyeing while supporting the development of more circular production models.
For the wider textile industry, FiberColors presents a different perspective on circularity by connecting textile waste with the production of chemicals required to manufacture new textile products. Turning wool waste into a feedstock for pigment production could help reduce dependence on conventional raw materials while retaining part of the value embedded in discarded fibres.
The ICIS Innovation Award recognition further underlines the industry’s growing interest in commercially viable solutions that combine waste recovery, alternative raw materials and textile manufacturing. As brands and manufacturers continue to seek more sustainable production methods, technologies such as FiberColors could contribute to the development of more resource-efficient textile value chains.
