Centre Signals Investment Push for Tea and Textile Sectors in West Bengal
The Centre is looking to support investment and development in West Bengal’s tea and textile sectors, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said while speaking at the inauguration of the fourth Kolkata Couture Expo in Kolkata.
According to Adhikari, he discussed the state’s financial position with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during his visit to Delhi on July 4. During the meeting, Sitharaman reportedly expressed interest in supporting Bengal’s tea and textile industries.
“She has much interest in two sectors and wants to help Bengal,” Adhikari said.
The tea sector was identified as one of the key areas requiring attention, particularly the welfare of tea garden workers. Adhikari noted that at least 25 tea gardens in the state are currently closed and called for measures to revive the sector.
Textiles were highlighted as the second priority area. Adhikari pointed to the strong craftsmanship and product quality among weaver communities in Purbasthali in East Burdwan and Shantipur in Nadia, where several families depend on traditional weaving.
He said the proposed focus on Bengal’s textile industry presents a significant opportunity for businesses and urged industry stakeholders to consider investing in the state.
The Union Finance Minister is expected to visit West Bengal in the last week of August, according to Adhikari.
The chief minister also assured textile businesses of support from the state government and said changes to existing legislation could be considered if required to facilitate industry development. He urged industry leaders to submit proposals outlining measures needed to strengthen the textile sector.
The comments were made at the two-day Kolkata Couture Expo, which is expected to generate business worth around ₹1,000 crore.
Adhikari also stressed the need for a stronger law-and-order environment, stating that the government would take measures to create a more supportive environment for businesses operating in the state.
