TechnoSport Invests Rs 4.5 Crore with IIT Delhi to Advance Sportswear R&D
Activewear brand TechnoSport is investing Rs 4.5 crore over three years to establish the TechnoSport Center for Research and Entrepreneurship in Sports Textile (T-CREST) in collaboration with IIT Delhi, marking a significant step towards strengthening sportswear research and product development in India.
The centre will be housed at IIT Delhi’s Sonipat campus and will focus on research, prototyping and the development of sport-specific products based on the requirements of athletes. Its initial research areas will include endurance running, badminton, cricket, volleyball and soccer, with products designed to address the performance needs of athletes competing at national and international levels.
Beyond product research, T-CREST will support startups developing innovative solutions for the sports-textile sector. TechnoSport may provide seed funding of up to Rs 20 lakh to selected startups, while also offering access to its manufacturing, retail, distribution and online infrastructure. This ecosystem is intended to help emerging companies develop, test and commercialise sports-textile products.
The initiative comes as TechnoSport continues to expand its manufacturing and research capabilities. The company currently produces more than 1 lakh garments per day and expects to manufacture around 35 million garments during the year. It has also recorded approximately 40% year-on-year growth over the past four to five years.
The collaboration with IIT Delhi is expected to bring together academic research, industrial expertise and athlete-focused product development, creating opportunities to develop advanced sportswear solutions within India. The centre could also provide a platform for translating research and emerging technologies into commercially viable products for the growing sportswear market.
“Our Rs 4.5 crore commitment is about building the science, capabilities and talent required to develop high-performance products in India that can stand alongside the best globally,” said Sunil Jhunjhunwala, Co-founder and Managing Director, TechnoSport.
Through T-CREST, TechnoSport and IIT Delhi aim to strengthen India’s capabilities in sports-textile research while creating a pathway for startups, researchers and manufacturers to collaborate on the next generation of high-performance sportswear.
