Odisha Cabinet Approves Major Reforms for Textile and Silk Industries
The Odisha Cabinet has approved major reforms to boost the textile and silk industries, supporting growth, investment, and stronger rural livelihoods across the state.

The Odisha Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved six key proposals, including the Mukhyamantri Bayan Shilpa Bikas Yojana (MBSBY) and the Mukhyamantri Resham Bikas Yojana (MRBY), aimed at strengthening the state’s textile, handloom and sericulture sectors.

Announcing the decisions in the Assembly on Saturday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling stated that under MBSBY, the government will allocate Rs. 490 crore (US $ 54.29 million) over five years to attract investment, empower local industries and expand employment opportunities in the textile and handloom sector. He said the scheme aligns with the Odisha Apparel and Technical Textile Policy 2022 and the Industrial Policy Resolution 2015, and will offer incentives to new textile manufacturing units with the broader goal of positioning Odisha as an emerging weaving hub.

Under the silk development initiative, MRBY, the government has earmarked Rs. 274 crore (US $ 30.36 million) over the next five years to bolster the state’s sericulture industry through improved infrastructure and skill-building. Mahaling noted that the scheme will promote ethical silk production by supporting silkworm seed preparation, species conservation and farmer incentives. Cooperative societies will assist with better marketing of silk products to prevent distress sales and ensure sustainable growth, he said.
