BCCL Delegation to Explore Textile Industry Development Model for Belgharia Township
In an effort to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rehabilitated families in the Jharia coalfield region, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) will send a high-level delegation to Bengaluru on June 19 and 20 to study textile manufacturing facilities and industrial parks operated by the Aditya Birla Group.
The delegation, headed by BCCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Manoj Kumar Agarwal, will evaluate the feasibility of developing a textile-based industrial ecosystem in Belgharia Township, Dhanbad, as part of the Jharia Master Plan (JMP).
The initiative follows directions from Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy, who during a visit to Dhanbad and Belgharia Township last year encouraged BCCL and officials of the Jharia Rehabilitation and Development Authority (JRDA) to explore partnerships with established industrial groups, including the Aditya Birla Group, for setting up textile manufacturing units in the region.
The proposed project aims to generate employment and income opportunities for families rehabilitated under the Jharia Master Plan, as well as communities impacted by mining activities. By promoting industrial diversification, the initiative seeks to reduce the region’s dependence on coal-related employment while fostering long-term economic development.
During the Bengaluru visit, the BCCL team will examine textile manufacturing operations, production processes, management practices, workforce development initiatives, and employment-generation models. The delegation will also assess infrastructure requirements, investment prospects, and the commercial viability of establishing textile-related industries in Belgharia Township.
A key focus of the study will be identifying opportunities to create jobs for local youth, enhance women’s participation in industrial activities, and establish vocational training programmes that support skill development and community inclusion.
The delegation is also expected to engage with industry leaders and management teams to understand how successful textile manufacturing models can be adapted to meet the socio-economic needs of the Jharia region.
The proposed initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen rehabilitation outcomes, diversify the local economy, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities through manufacturing-led development.
