Gujarat cotton area shrinks 13% as farmers find groundnut more remunerative
Cotton acreages in Gujarat, the largest producing state are down by around 13 per cent as a section of farmers have shifted to oilseeds mainly groundnut and soyabean.

As on August 4, the cotton area in Gujarat stood at 20.35 lakh hectares (lh), down 13 per cent from the same period last year’s 23.35 lh as per the state agriculture department. The normal area for cotton in the state is 25.34 lh.

However, the decline in acreages in Gujarat is being made up in states such as Karnataka and Telangana among others.
