Tamil Nadu Launches Technical Textiles Scheme, Announces Tirupur Technology Centre
New initiatives aim to boost technical textiles, MSMEs and high-value manufacturing
The Tamil Nadu Government has announced the launch of the Technical Textiles Transformation Scheme (TTTS) and the establishment of the Tirupur Textiles Technology Centre (TTTC) to strengthen the State’s technical textiles ecosystem and help entrepreneurs and MSMEs transition towards high-value textile manufacturing.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson while presenting the State’s maiden Budget in the Assembly.
The Technical Textiles Transformation Scheme will be implemented in collaboration with international educational and research institutions, with financial support from the Tamil Nadu Technical Textiles Mission. The programme is designed to equip entrepreneurs, MSMEs and textile manufacturers with international exposure, technical training, technology transfer, market intelligence, innovation support and business mentorship.
The government said the initiative aims to increase the contribution of technical textiles to Tamil Nadu’s overall textile production while creating new opportunities in sectors such as healthcare, automotive, construction, agriculture and defence.
As part of the initiative, the government will establish the Tirupur Textiles Technology Centre (TTTC) with an investment of ₹10 crore. The centre will focus on technology adoption, skill development and industry collaboration, supporting the State’s transition towards advanced textile manufacturing.
The Budget also includes plans to upgrade Tirupur’s infrastructure in phases to encourage environmentally sustainable textile production.
Recognised as India’s knitwear capital, Tirupur contributes nearly 90% of the country’s cotton knitwear exports through its integrated MSME-based manufacturing ecosystem, making it an ideal location for the new technology centre.
