Uzbekistan Showcases Textile Sector Potential at Korea-Uzbekistan Business Forum
Uzbekistan’s textile and apparel industry is rapidly transforming into one of the country’s strongest economic sectors, creating significant opportunities for Korean manufacturers, retailers, and investors.
Speaking at the Korea-Uzbekistan Business Forum in Tashkent, Ruhullo Zikrilayev, Deputy Director of Uzbekistan’s Agency for the Development of Light Industry, highlighted the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy. More than 10,000 enterprises now operate across the country’s light industry sector, with textile and apparel products exported to over 75 countries worldwide.
Uzbekistan, once known primarily for exporting raw cotton, has successfully moved up the value chain. Today, finished textile and apparel products account for approximately 65 percent of the country’s textile exports, reflecting a significant shift toward higher-value manufacturing.
To support continued growth, the government has introduced more than 15 incentive programs for textile and garment businesses. These initiatives include preferential financing, support for foreign specialists, assistance with overseas showrooms and warehouses, exhibition participation funding, ERP implementation support, and international certification programs.
Officials emphasized that Uzbekistan offers competitive production costs, strategic access to major international markets, and an increasingly attractive investment environment. However, continued improvements in logistics, regulatory consistency, and workforce development will be essential to attracting larger volumes of foreign investment.
Korean apparel manufacturer Youngone Corporation was cited as a successful example of international investment in Uzbekistan. The company operates major manufacturing facilities in Samarkand and Tashkent, producing garments for leading global brands.
Uzbek officials expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation with Korean retailers, manufacturers, and investors to develop globally competitive textile and apparel brands and further expand the country’s position in the international textile market.
