ECCO Launches First Footwear Made with Innovative Protein-Based Fibre
ECCO Unveils Groundbreaking Shoe Made from Protein-Based Fibre Developed with Spinnova

JYVÄSKYLÄ, Finland — April 29, 2026 — ECCO, in collaboration with Spinnova, has introduced a limited-edition version of its BIOM® 720 shoe, marking a major step forward in sustainable material innovation. The new footwear incorporates a unique protein-based fibre derived from leather industry by-products, transforming what was once considered waste into a high-performance textile material.

The partnership between ECCO and Spinnova began in 2020, focusing on finding innovative ways to repurpose leather offcuts. Traditionally, such by-products—like wet blue shavings removed during leather processing—are discarded, incinerated, or composted. However, through Spinnova’s patented technology, these residual materials are mechanically refined into durable textile fibres, giving them a second life in manufacturing.

Unlike conventional recycling methods that often degrade material quality, this process maintains the natural structure of leather fibres. The resulting material offers tensile strength comparable to wool and significantly higher flexibility than cotton, making it suitable for a wide range of woven and knitted textile applications.

By avoiding chemical dissolution and relying instead on mechanical processing, the technology not only preserves fibre integrity but also reduces environmental impact and production waste. This approach aligns with circular economy principles by maximizing resource efficiency and extending the lifecycle of raw materials.

The launch of the ECCO BIOM® 720 with protein-based fibre highlights the potential of upcycling in the footwear and textile industries. It represents a shift from experimental development to commercial application, opening new avenues for sustainable product design.

Janne Poranen, CEO of Spinnova Plc, described the launch as a significant milestone after more than five years of joint development, emphasizing the commercial viability of transforming leather by-products into premium textile fibres.

ECCO CEO Thomas Gøgsig added that the collaboration demonstrates how combining expertise and innovative technology can redefine material use in footwear manufacturing, pushing the boundaries of design and sustainability.
