Tiruppur Textile Exports Expected to Reach $11.5 Billion by 2030, Says Giriraj Singh

TIRUPPUR: Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh has expressed confidence that Tiruppur’s textile exports will grow to $11.5 billion by 2030-31, aligning with the Centre’s ambitious target of achieving $100 billion in textile exports nationwide during the same period. Tamil Nadu’s overall textile export target has been set at $21 billion.

Speaking to media representatives after meeting leaders of the knitwear industry in Tiruppur on Sunday, Singh emphasized the town’s vital role in India’s textile ecosystem. Tiruppur, widely regarded as the country’s leading knitwear hub, recorded exports worth ₹42,544 crore (approximately $4.51 billion) in the last financial year.

The minister noted that both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments are working together to strengthen sectors such as textiles, cotton, handlooms, handicrafts, and sericulture to achieve the export goals. He also highlighted the approval of the PM MITRA Park in Virudhunagar, which is expected to boost textile manufacturing and investment in the state.

Singh said the recent removal of import duty on cotton would support industrial growth by reducing raw material costs. He added that the textile sector’s broader target for 2030-31 is $350 billion, comprising $100 billion in exports and $250 billion from the domestic market.

Highlighting India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), the minister stated that the number of partner countries has increased to 56, opening new opportunities for textile exports. With the global textile and garment import market valued at around $900 billion, India aims to secure a significantly larger share through these trade agreements.

According to Singh, the textile industry is already benefiting from a 20–30% decline in cotton prices, creating favorable conditions for growth. He said textile clusters in Tiruppur, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are well-positioned to capitalize on emerging export opportunities.

The minister also praised Tiruppur’s transition from predominantly cotton-based manufacturing to the production of blended fabrics and man-made fibres (MMF). He commended local industries for adopting sustainable manufacturing practices and environmentally friendly technologies.

Assuring continued government support, Singh said the Centre would assist the industry in establishing hostels for women workers, developing new industrial clusters, and adopting advanced manufacturing technologies. He further stressed the importance of making India a global leader in producing next-generation fibres derived from recycled and natural materials while fostering a new generation of entrepreneurs in the textile sector.
