Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu: Reinforcing its commitment to strengthening the textile industry, the Tamil Nadu Government has set an ambitious target of attracting ₹1,000 crore in investments in the technical textiles sector by 2030. The announcement was made by T.N. Venkatesh, Principal Secretary, Department of Handlooms, Textiles, Khadi and Handicrafts, during the inauguration of a Technical Textiles Conference held in Coimbatore.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Venkatesh emphasized the State’s focus on encouraging investments from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the rapidly expanding technical textiles segment. Tamil Nadu plans to accelerate the development of textiles used across key sectors such as automobiles, healthcare, sports, agriculture, construction, and infrastructure.

As a major step towards achieving this vision, industrial establishments exchanged Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the government for investments worth ₹123 crore. These projects are expected to become operational before the end of 2026, generating employment opportunities and enhancing manufacturing capabilities within the State.

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s strong position in the textile industry, Mr. Venkatesh noted that the State currently contributes nearly $8 billion in textile exports annually. He added that the Central Government has set a target of increasing exports to $21 billion, creating significant opportunities for industry expansion and innovation.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Handlooms, Textiles and Khadi, M. Vijay Balaji, reiterated the government’s commitment to attracting investments and generating employment in the textile sector. He acknowledged the challenges posed by increasing global competition from countries such as Bangladesh but expressed confidence in Tamil Nadu’s ability to regain its leadership position.

“The State has a rich textile heritage and a strong manufacturing ecosystem. We are committed to revitalizing the sector and making Tamil Nadu a global benchmark for technical textiles,” the Minister said.

Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar highlighted the significant contribution of the textile industry to the district’s economy and described technical textiles as one of the most promising growth segments for the future.

Industry leaders also called for additional policy support. SIMA Chairman Durai Palanisamy urged the government to convert the existing interest subvention scheme for technical textile investments into a 15% capital subsidy to accelerate adoption. He further stressed the importance of strengthening the textile processing sector while leveraging opportunities in man-made fibres, which are expected to drive future growth.

K.S. Sundararaman, Chairman of the SIMA Cotton Development and Research Association, pointed out that technical textiles offer one of the highest asset-to-turnover ratios within the textile and apparel industry. He encouraged manufacturers to capitalize on government incentives and emerging market opportunities to diversify into this high-value segment.

With increasing demand for specialized textile applications worldwide, Tamil Nadu’s strategic focus on technical textiles is expected to enhance industrial competitiveness, boost exports, attract investments, and create thousands of jobs over the coming years.
